"Juliet finally breaks the silly boys up and tells Sawyer that he’s being a moron because of course they need to help Jack blow some shit up. Sawyer is understandably confused because Juliet has just activated the full-on 180° decision center in her female brain and changed her mind completely."

Her "female brain"? Really? You're using Juliet's gender as the reason why she had decided to help detonate the bomb? You were paying attention to what was going on between Juliet, Sawyer and Kate. Right?

I just stumbled upon this. I am working on the 2nd season right now. I would like to point out something about the statue.

It does look like a crocodile head, but what about the ears? I have never seen an Egyptian statue of any reptile significance with ears. They look like the ears of a Hippo. So I was thinking maybe it was a Hippo head just with sharp teeth. The jaw line of the statue seems a bit more rounded and could pass as a Hippo if viewed from the front.

However this piece I found below on a quick search of Hippo Egyptian gods might hold the best answer. It would explain how a statue with a croc head might have Hippo ears. It says the name of the god is Ammut.

Ammut - the fore-part of a crocodile, her hind-quarters are those of a hippopotamus; her middle part [is that] of a lion.

Ammut sat at the judgment of the dead in The Hall of Double Ma'at (when the deceased's heart was weighed on the scales against Ma'at), ready to devour the souls of the unworthy - the final death for an Egyptian! It has even been suggested that she was also a protector of Osiris, because of her position at the Judgment.

I have heard some speculation that some believe that all on this island are in fact in Limbo and that they are dead already. This description of this god seems to fit that hypothesis.

In case your wondering... No I'm not an Egyptian expert, but I have seen nearly every episode of Stargate SG-1 and do at least know some obscure Egyptian references.

Hey Chris,

Great site. I found it after I watched the season finale and read all your analysis in one sitting. Really interesting stuff.

This could just be me but the eye that is shown in the teaser for the new season seems a bit green to me. I am thinking it is not Jack but actually Juliet.

After watching "316", I noticed that Jack's eye was brown. Also the eye in the new teaser seems a bit feminine to me.

Thanks and look forward to reading next season

Hello Chris,

Or should I call you Fhris? 53 Paragraphs. NOT 80. You're a bit of hyperbolist sometimes and I underestimated a bit myself how long your column really is.

So here I am, reading your post as I procrastinate power-washing our deck. I guess on some level this is my way of saying that I'm sorry you slept on the couch last night :(

Lulu (our youngest and smartest dog) actually sat next to me and read along. It was cute, sorry you missed it.

Now to address your post... I told you so! I told you Juliet would get killed off. You know as well as I do that I've had a girl crush on Juliet too... but honestly darling, you'll get over it. You should probably start a post about her new show, 'V'. It's an alien doomsday series, so it'll be right up your alley!

At least I still have Desmond to drool over for myself ;) Too bad you don't have a sexy accent. NO, 'Southern' does not count as a sexy accent.

And in an effort to earn myself a foot-rub tonight, I will end this comment by saying:

Chris, you are the best Lost analyzer on the face of this planet. Your post is witty and fun to read as well as insightful. I love it love it love it. You are so smart, how do you manage to contain your brain inside your head? How did I ever understand Lost before I met you? Let's play "Lost" tonight... I'll be Penny, you be Desmond ;)

In all seriousness, you're very talented. You put passion into everything you do... whether it's writing about Lost or installing hardwood floors with me, and that's why you're so good at all of it. If only you had the same passion for giving your girlfriend footrubs...

Love you!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, Juliet was my favorite character and I don't think they're done with her. I think she was the variable that Daniel spoke about, actually. She made the decisions in the final episode - she made the action happen - and the Jacob-less flashback makes clear that he did not guide her life at all. Further, she was not brought in as part of Dharma, Rousseau's expedition, or the Oceanic Flight - she was brought in independently outside of the major movements of players. Her presence affected numerous players in the game. Personally, I think she may be the key.

Also, my wife thinks that time was changed and the flashbacks were actually ... flashsideways of Jacob maintaining the course of events to make sure they happen as he needs them to.

And John Locke is just Jesus Christ with really horrible luck - they both got talked into an arranged sacrifice, but Locke got screwed over with his.

Thank you for a very detailed and informative description of "The Incident."

I appreciate all of the intepretations of the tapestries and the other things that aren't as clearly revealed by just watching the episode and not knowing Russian or Latin or "tapestry."

My condolences to you for the loss of Juliet. I too am suffering, due to the loss of Daniel Faraday. I hope against hope that both Juliet and Daniel will return next season.

Take care and keep writing...

Hey Chris,

Feeling sorry for Juliet as well. It was a heroic way to go, and more than Kate would have ever done.

Well, I'm going to go back to season finale of Star Trek again. The whole man causing his own demise and the Q judging man. I guess there is some similarity - can man evolve beyond his limits and make the change that is required to save themselves, or will man continually self-destruct. Who will be LOST's Pichard?

I also had mixed feelings about this season as I felt the detailed character writing was gone save for Juliet and Saywer. John and Ben saved the show as usual.

Looking forward to season 6 and reading your write ups.

Hi Chris,

I also believe there is a good arguement to be made on Mr Murphey's comments about Esau being the smoke monster -

I also think he reanimated and recruited or was the manifistation of Christian Sheppard. Chris twice told Locke to move the Island resulting in his Death resulting in Focke. Well maybe, kinda.

Also, is it just me or does it seem Ben has had a complete character assasination - he seems like a broken man and now we know what he knows, all the mystery and power he seemed to have has gone.

Much love

Chris,

Come on, admit it, we're all LOST and con-FUSED. We must admit that J.J., Damon et al are quite the clever writers, but I have one small suggestion: change the name to "Trading Places." For X-ample in "The Incident" we find:

1. Jacob brings people to the island to test them - similar to the "Trading Places" storyline of the Dukes testing Winthorpe and Billy Ray Valentine in their nature versus nurture experiment.

2. The antagonist - Jacob's nemesis (aka Mr. X) - was hiding in plain sight since the first act, trading places with the dead.

3. Protagonist Jack trading places from a man of science to a man of faith, believing it's his destiny to save the LOST by presumably blowing up the EMF breach with a "small plutonium bomb."

4. Bernard and Rose trading places with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (assuming they made it safely to the cave before Jack blew the breach)

5. Other references to the great John Landis movie, "Trading Places," such as Jack and Sawyer putting up their Dukes before the Incident and Sawyer telling Kate they have to drink their OJ back home.

Well, if those "Trading Places" references are deliberate, perhaps the clever writers are telling us the destiny of LOST is OJ futures, as in Sun in a Bottle, as in Fusion.

Hence, the LOST con-Fusion nuke scenario: Assume that Jughead Jack succeeds in eliminating the EMF breach and the Swan Hatch, that he changes the timeline that brought down flight 815, and in season 6 they all arrive safely in LA, perhaps he merely succeeds in trading places, replacing their small misery on the island with a greater one by bringing a fusion nuke in a suitcase on flight 815. If so, then Jack's destiny is our destiny and we are all LOST, con-FUSED.

BTW - LOST is in the eye of the beholder: Check out the HD screencap of Jack's eye in the trailer for Season 6 and compare the image of the mushroom cloud with the mushroom cloud in the background of the "Destiny Calls" LOST poster.)

If the "Trading Places" storyline plays out, I'm betting Jack (Winthorpe), Dez (Coleman) and Sawyer (Billy Ray Valentine) will turn the tables on the evil Mr. X (John Locke) and Mr. X "ends up" with the gorilla.

(Winthorpe to Penelope)
"Those men wanted to have sex with me."

Penelope called Jacob. "They're coming."

First of all, my condolences on Juliet. You called it happening, but it didn't make it any less painful.

I think it's a shame that she died. I chalk it up to the writers being committed to the Jack-Kate-Sawyer love triangle, even though they ended up with something so much better with Sawyer and Juliet. But I guess happy couples make boring TV. At least she got to go out setting of a nuclear bomb, which was pretty damn bad ass.

As for Kate, not only has she been seeking out things that weren't hers since she was young, she's also been getting captured (this time, by the store manager). I'm beginning to think the marshal was just really shitty at his job, since he's the only one who couldn't catch her for an extended period of time.

Something struck me about the Locke reveal too. It wasn't just that Locke is dead, since technically last year's finale revealed that. It's the fact that Locke wasn't special, he was just a pawn. Richard said it in the finale - he told Jack that Locke claimed he would be their leader, but Richard said there was nothing special about him. Add to that the fact that Locke only believed that he had to die and bring everyone back to the island because he was destined to be a great leader, when really it was just Esau twisting Locke's ambitions and beliefs to stir up Ben's jealousy (since it was Focke who told Richard to patch up Locke and tell him he had to die for the sake of the island). Most characters who died on the show did so either redeeming themselves or coming to peace with their lives; Locke was at peace, but he was killed because of a lie. It's makes his life that much more tragic.

Also, do you think Esau is the smoke monster? Obviously, the smoke monster can appear as other people and it appeared as Ben's daughter to convince Ben to follow Focke blindly, so it would stand to reason that Focke/Esau is the smoke monster, or is at least controlling it.

And one final prediction from me - I don't think setting off the bomb changed the future, or at least not in the way they were hoping. Maybe it altered something, but I don't think it will keep their plane from crashing on the island. It's too much of a cop out to just undo the previous five seasons. I think either the explosion always happened or it causes something completely unexpected to happen that isn't a rewrite of what we've seen so far.

Great work this season. Your recaps have been great and funny as hell. In fact, Down the Hatch is consistently "one of the smartest articles I’ve ever read about what goes on on” Lost. I look forward to your return next season (or hopefully sooner).
