Absolutely have to agree with mrbasehart. The 5 men that he mentioned are the best of the best. Gene Hackman has been my favorite all time actor for years and (being slightly older than the average reader base here) I actually used to watch Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns before he became a good actor. No matter how bad his acting was back then he was always Cool. Sean Connery is amazing at whatever he does and he's still the best Bond ever in my book. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are both amazing actors as well.

Like the bestest column in the history of ever.

Cloris looks like my nan in that picture, or rather like my nan did when she was younger.

I'd like the old boney one to stay the hell away from Terry Pratchett but I fancy that's a vain hope :(

Nice article, Court! Following on from jewishcarpenter's own suggestions, I'd probably go with:

1. Clint Eastwood
2. Michael Caine
3. Sean Connery
4. Morgan Freeman
5. Gene Hackman

All those dudes are getting old, and yet some of them are doing the finest work of their career.

Yeah, I didn't realize he'd died until I was looking at the Wiki list. And then I was like "well holy shit, that's not okay."

I suppose if I were to have a list of "5 people I'd kick death's ass to protect" it would be.

1. Adam West
2. Abe Vigoda
3. Mickey Rooney
4. Betty White
5. Cloris Leachman

Court, this was a very passionate and heart felt article which I enjoyed. I feel as you do with all of the stars mentioned and am sorry about the ones that have passed. While Michael Jacksons star power haded faded a bit in the recent past, he was an icons to millions of adoring fans. In a country that sets a benchmark for the world, it's sad to say that racism still plays such an active role that Michael Jackson's
superstardom had to open doors for so many future stars. You can see evidence of this just by listening to the comments of so many at the BET awards. I'm also sad that he was only a year younger than me and I don't like people dying in that age bracket.
As far as Betty White, she should be granted immortality because there will never be another like her. She is universally loved by virtually every age group imaginable and the world would not be the same without her.
As far as your beloved Swayze, it's sad to say that he is finally in a fight that we all know he cannot win. That said, as long as AMC exists on the cable universe he will live on forever in "Roadhouse". They have got to run that movie at least 312 times per month. I would also be remiss if I did not agree with your other choices in Mel, Cloris and Elizabeth Taylor. None of us can live forever but it would be nice if some could.
I'll shut up now so you can get to work on Betty's gear.
