I think HBO is at fault for its poor marketing of the show. I stayed away for years because I thought it was going to be yet another cop show--think NYPD Blue, but more man ass. When I finally sat down in the summer of 2008 with Season 1, I didn't know what to expect. Two or three episodes in, I was its bitch. I watched all five seasons in less than a month. What I saw was a deeply beautiful and heartbreaking mosaic, rendered by complex and real characters and their vivid stories. I believe it's a show that deserves to be studied. This is a show that is truly untouchable by most, if not all competition.
