Week 106 Spotlight: The Martin Short of his generation
Martin Short, considered by some to be a comedic icon, has managed to have a long career in comedy without actually being funny.
But it’s not just Martin Short. Many well-known comedians haven’t let a lack of talent slow them down. Carlos Mencia and George Lopez both have lucrative careers because they appeal to the ever-growing Latino population. Dane Cook has had a great career stealing jokes from Louis CK and spastically telling them to frat boys. Chris Kattan parlayed an unfunny run on Saturday Night Live into several unfunny films.
But which comedian is the Martin Short of Joel and Lars’ generation? Why can’t Lars keep track of the days of the week? Where does Joel head when he wants to go where everybody knows his name (and he’s always glad he came)? The answers to these questions and more are in this week’s podcast.

Just so you know, guys: I am a chick, but not a stripper…acutally a grad student . Not that it matters in the slightest. Anyway, if you’re looking for a Latino comedian who strays from the, “Hey, we’re Latino and funny and different from white people and here’s a completely rote and prosaic joke that explains why!” format, check out Pablo Francisco. Seriously. Google these three words: Little Tortilla Boy. Or Ecstasy at a Techno Club. So, that’s technically like 8 words.

P.S. Thanks for the only mildly insulting shout out. Who-hoo!

and thanks for burying my shout-out directly after all the stripper talk. You know no one was paying attention to anything other than strippers after all that. Thanks a lot. Jerks.
And, yes, I am a geek.

I would actually recommend “Dan in Real Life” – Dane cook is not all “Dane Cook-ish” and Steve Carell is able to exhibit a proficiency at dramatic acting – allowing him to stem beyond The Office, but all the while maintaining his recognizable acting style: the serious sarcasm, which was portrayed with touching genuinity in Little Miss Sunshine. Give it the good ole ‘College Try’.
