Regarding the Grinch, I can’t actually confirm this from personal experience, but I’ve heard that TV networks now tend to air it with an extra commercial break. This presumably means cuts and/or sped-up footage, but I can’t tell you what was altered.

I assume they also had plenty of one-thirds/snipes/violators/popups (or whatever those irritating commercials that take up the bottom half of your screen and, when feeling particularly assholish, also include audio)?

Yep. Gone are the days of innocence if you can cram more commercials in. I have NO doubt that an ABC programming director thought of this. I’ve yet to meet ANY exec who has an inkling of what’s right and wrong.

This reminds me to get a copy of it on DVD. I usually watch my old taped off of TV in the 80s version. It’s nostalgia times two! But that’s about shot, finally. Glad I didn’t watch it on TV this year. It probably would have broken my heart or made me want to stab. Either way, not a good time.

I had no idea this was happening (seeing as how I’ve given up on the integrity of network cable television), and I didn’t think I could resent the corporate marketing machine that is commercialism more than I already do – but this really rubs me the wrong way.
