In case you missed it, the news broke on Saturday that Matt Smith will be stepping down as The Doctor at the end of this year. It was announced at the end of the season that Steven Moffat would return as showrunner for another season, so the hope was that Smith would return for one more season as well. But clearly that isn’t in the cards. Joel Murphy shares his thoughts on Smith’s unexpected departure and shares the official statements Smith and showrunner Steven Moffat released when news broke in this brief “Boob Tube Breakdown” update.

The seventh season of Doctor Who came to an end on Saturday with enough wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff to make your head explode. The Doctor and Clara ventured to the one place he should never go – Trenzalore – to face an old villain and a new set of monsters known as the Whisper Men. Along the way, Clara’s secret was revealed and a new character was introduced as we all prepare for the big 50th anniversary special in November. Joel Murphy recaps the finale, looks at all of the potential time travel paradoxes and offers a theory on the identity of the new mystery character.

Neil Gaiman’s Doctor Who episode from last season – “The Doctor’s Wife” – was a game changer. Gaiman returned on Saturday with a new script, one that found The Doctor, Clara and her the two children under her care traveling to a rundown amusement park to battle an army of Cybermen. Was Gaiman able to capture lightning in a bottle twice? Find out in our in-depth review, which also has an embedded video of “She Said, He Said,” the online prequel to next week’s season finale, which promises to reveal Clara’s backstory and The Doctor’s real name.

As we all know by now, the TARDIS is a time machine that is bigger on the inside. It contains an infinite amount of rooms (and corridors), though typically we only ever see the control room. However, this week the TARDIS crash lands and its engine begins to leak, all while Clara is trapped inside. So The Doctor must recruit the salvage crew that crash landed the TARDIS to help save her. As a result, we see more of The Doctor’s ship than we ever have before – including the library, the swimming pool and the Eye of Harmony. If you dug the episode, make sure to check out our review of “Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS,” which includes a theory about Clara’s mysterious doppelgangers.

When is a ghost story not really a ghost story? When it’s part of an episode of Doctor Who. This week, The Doctor and Clara travel to 1974 to investigate the “Witch of the Well” inside Caliburn mansion. But it quickly becomes apparent that things are not at all what they seem. The actual explanation for the witch ends up being full of “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey” goodness. We have a complete breakdown of “Hide,” as well as some in-depth musings on the scientific explanation of the supernatural phenomenon in the episode, in our review.

While trapped aboard a Russian submarine armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons, The Doctor and Clara square off against a thawed out Ice Warrior in the aptly-named “Cold War” this week. It’s a fairly standard “Monster of the Week” episode – with no hints at Clara’s past or any implications for the season’s overarcing storyline. Joel Murphy breaks down all of the action and shares his thoughts on the standalone episode in this week’s review.

Doctor Who returned from hiatus on Saturday to bring fans “The Bells of Saint John,” which features The Doctor’s newest companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman). Fans have seen version of Clara twice before – one that lived in Victorian England and one that lived in the future – but both of those Claras ended up dead. The Doctor tries to get to the bottom of the mystery of the “twice dead” girl by tracking down the modern-day version of Clara. But first, he’ll have to battle with a new villain – the Spoonheads – who are controlled by an old foe. Joel Murphy has an in-depth recap of this week’s episode (complete with theories on where Clara’s story is headed).
