If you're like me, you probably lounge around the house in garter belts and marabou–trimmed slippers, eating bonbons and obsessively checking MySpace to see if anyone has friended you. I recently received a message on said website from a gentleman who not only wanted to let me know that I am the woman of his dreams, but also to propose marriage to me via MySpace message.

Orly?

YaRly!

In this rather lengthy message, he referred to yours truly as a "cheesecake pin-up queen."

The term "cheesecake" was supposedly coined when someone referred to a pretty woman as "better than cheesecake." The female equivalent of "beefcake," perhaps? Now, the term is used to denote pictures of provocatively-clad women. The term "pin-up" refers to either a picture of a sexually attractive person (meant to be displayed on a wall) or a person who would be considered a suitable model for such a picture.

Pin-up art had its roots in the 1890s, with a French artist who, in perfecting a three stone lithographic process, created some of the first advertisement posters featuring images of attractive women to sell various products. Hey, sex sells!

The heyday of pin-up art in the U.S. came in the 1930s and 1940s. At that time, the paintings of artists such as George Petty and Alberto Vargas appeared everywhere, including some of the first issues of Esquire magazine (which featured the first two page gatefold, precursor of the three page Playboy centerfold). During WWII, cheesecake images of both nameless "girls next door" and movie stars were painted on the noses of airplanes, and photos and magazines decorated the locker of many a G.I. The 1950s then gave us the golden age of pin-up photographs, including some of the most famous (and infamous) images of Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page.

What does this have to do with my photos for this month? Well, a National Cherry Festival took place this month from July 6th to July 13th, and July 30th is National Cheesecake Day. So ...

I give you cherry cheesecake pin-ups of me, your stewed, screwed and tattooed pin-up girl next door.

xoxo
- Tara
