K... here is the deal. Over the past week there have been so many things going on in Washington that there is little hope of covering it all. So, I now offer you the
Cliffs Notes version of this weeks events and the things to watch for in the coming weeks.
State of the Union
The week really started on last Tuesday. The President started by pulling his parrot routine. Iraq, Iraq, Iraq. Stay the course, Stay the course, Stay the course. He then laid out a large package of initiatives that he, of course, will never be around to see come to fruition. All and all this may have been the best speech he's given since being elected in 2000.
DeLay is over
Get it? Get it? DeLay = Delay? Okay, so no one ever accused me of being all that funny, but Tom DeLay has been officially replaced as the House Majority Leader. John Boehner is a Republican Congressman from Ohio and has been handed the responsibility of navigating the house through the mid-term elections. The way ahead is full of land-mines and pitfalls as many in the party are heading into their campaigns carrying the weight of Iraq and Lobbyist scandals back to their home districts. Oh, yeah, this is the job I want.
Zacarias Moussaoui
Just so everyone knows the jury selection started on Monday. That's all.
Can you hear me now?
Also on Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee started hearings into the NSA's domestic surveillance. The very first witness, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, wasn't even sworn in. Which means that Sen. Arlen Specter made sure that nothing that is said in the hearing will result in any action whatsoever by the Senate. It doesn't matter if the program is legal or not because until someone brings a viable lawsuit it'll never get to a court and get the real attention it deserves.
Rudy is going to run
Just so you know Rudy Giuliani has been touring the south and speaking at everything from Fish Fries to Baptist conventions. Either Rudy is going to run or he's opening up his own chain of Deep Fried Pasta Barns.
